Slightly not breaking news

Friday, May 27, 2011 8:46:00 PM

While having a few days in Hesket Newmarket (nice village, nice pub, nice beer - heaven!) over Easter I happened to end up at Carrock Mine and was amazed to find some CATS people, whose names I should remember but don't , digging out the entrance to the Canadian Crosscut and rebuilding it. All done with the approval of the appropriate park bodies.

They were having to work in a pond as part of the agreement was that no polluted water should go into the beck. The bulk of the mine water was being piped out and the remainder collecting in the pond and every so often was being sprayed out on the fellside round where the last mill used to be to naturally filter out all the nasty mud before the water reached the beck.

Some pictures to follow when I find where I've put my camera.

Is this the start of a new era of Lakeland mine exploration and preservation?

The newsletter has been posted and all MOLEs should now be informed of the existence of this new MOLEs Website, thanks to Nick Green for organising it  and Neil for hosting it.

It will be an ongoing task but something I feel will help connect members and start people thinking about  what they want from being a member of the MOLEs, it is after all your society.  What do you want to get involved with,  please let us have your views, ideas and opinions, your feedback is wanted.

Kate Tyler lead her first MOLEs underground trip, this was into Coniston Copper mines where she shared some of her extensive knowledge of these workings with us and everyone had a really good day out, well done to Kate and we look forward to further trips lead by her.

Unfortunately we did not have a large turn out for the social event at the national Coal Mining museum at Caphouse but it was a really good day out and enjoyed by all.

We will be looking at the possibility of other social events, one suggestion is a regular pub meet, held at various locations in order to spread the travel for members, again your thoughts and comments.
