Slightly not breaking news

Friday, May 27, 2011 8:46:00 PM

While having a few days in Hesket Newmarket (nice village, nice pub, nice beer - heaven!) over Easter I happened to end up at Carrock Mine and was amazed to find some CATS people, whose names I should remember but don't , digging out the entrance to the Canadian Crosscut and rebuilding it. All done with the approval of the appropriate park bodies.

They were having to work in a pond as part of the agreement was that no polluted water should go into the beck. The bulk of the mine water was being piped out and the remainder collecting in the pond and every so often was being sprayed out on the fellside round where the last mill used to be to naturally filter out all the nasty mud before the water reached the beck.

Some pictures to follow when I find where I've put my camera.

Is this the start of a new era of Lakeland mine exploration and preservation?

Later

Nick
